These are free here in the Twin Cities if you're able to get them. They’re around at some local businesses here to grab, but if you know us personally, just reach out to one of us and we can figure it out.
For anyone who's not local, the pricing is low and essentially just covers our costs—any profits we end up with will be donated to the Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota.
From Jes:
Hey. I love Minnesota and Minneapolis so much. I live in Milwaukee, WI now, which is also a great city, but I’m from Minnesota and it will always have my heart. Landland is located in Minneapolis as are a lot of my very favorite people on earth. I hope everyone is seeing what’s happening there; please know that it’s likely a lot worse than whatever you’re being shown. Also know that Minneapolis is an absolutely wonderful city in an absolutely wonderful state.
All cities have problems, all states have problems, yes, but Mpls/MN are truly excellent places to live, and that’s in part BECAUSE of the large immigrant population, not in spite of it. I believe MN has the largest population of Hmong and Somali immigrants in the US, dating back to the 1970s and the 1990s, respectively. This isn’t some new scary “invasion,” as this government would like you to believe. These immigrants are part of the fabric of the state, and the state is surely better because of it, but even more importantly, they belong there as much as anyone else.
It’s not some problem the federal government needs to come solve for MN. Nobody there is asking for this kind of lawless, unconstitutional occupation of the city. ICE is literally terrorizing Minnesota right now and it has nothing to do with keeping Minnesotans or the country safe.
I’m so so so so proud of the way Minnesotans have been standing up to the invasion by ICE. I’m certainly biased and some part of me wants to think that Minnesotans are special in this regard, but what I really believe is that any American city facing this kind of terrorism would show up in a similar way. Things are obviously really really really terrible BUT I still believe there are more good people than bad ones, and that anyone who actually lives in communities with immigrants understands that it’s a net good (or doesn’t even think about it because it’s just NORMAL and DEEPLY AMERICAN, in fact) and that most people would still go to bat for their neighbor even if they don’t know them.
A few reasons these protests matter: It gives a model for the rest of the country for when ICE etc invariably oversteps in their cities. It shows immigrants/people of color/other marginalized groups that A LOT if not MOST of us think this is HORSESHIT. It shows the rest of the world that we aren’t going willingly into the night, which could matter at some point, honestly. And, (least likely because our reps, especially the republican ones, are a bunch of weak ass cowards who have abdicated all responsibility, but still) it puts some pressure on the people who *technically* have the power to hold this admin accountable.
I know it’s not cool to feel this way; I know I’m supposed to be like “we’re cooked” or whatever, but that’s not productive and most of us are stuck here in this country so we might as well do the things we can do while we can do them, and one of those things is to keep saying this is not okay as loud as possible. We can’t let it become the new normal.
So, there are big anti ice protests all over the country this Friday, please consider finding one near you and going if you are able. If you haven’t been yet, it honestly feels good to be around other people who feel similarly.
